Elder Ephraim (1928-2019), an Athonite ascetic since 1948 and disciple of Saint Joseph the Hesychast, became the abbot of Philotheou Monastery on Mount Athos in 1973 and later repopulated three other Athonite monasteries as well as five women's monasteries in Greece, being renowned as a holy man and discerning spiritual father. Elder Ephraim first came to Canada in 1979 for health reasons, but responding to the spiritual needs of the Orthodox in America, he came every year confessing and guiding souls, eventually founding seventeen monasteries, including Saint Anthony's Monastery in Florence, Arizona, where he settled permanently. Elder Ephraim fell asleep in the Lord on the 7th of December 2019.
